"Weaving Designs by Bertha Gray Hayes"

by Norma Smayda, Gretchen White, Jody Brown and Katharine Schelleng
Schiffer Publishing, Ltd., 2009.

This book features the original sample collection and handwritten drafts of the talented early 20th century weaver, Bertha Gray Hayes, of Providence, Rhode Island. She designed and wove unique miniature overshot patterns for four-shaft looms. The book contains color reproductions of her seventy-two original sample cards and twenty recently discovered patterns, most pictured with a woven sample, and each with a computer-generated drawdown. Her designs are distinctive in their asymmetry and personal in her use of name drafting to create the designs.

As Madelyn van der Hooght says in her endorsement "Readers will also love the book’s enchanting glimpse into our handweaving heritage, including tidbits about the National Conferences of American Handweavers, first held in 1938."

This 208 page colorful, hardcover book retails for $39.99. You can order a discounted copy from the website for $35.00 plus $4.00 s/h.
